At LayerZero Power Systems, quality is a mindset that runs through every wire, connection, and component that we build. From design to final inspection, our goal is to ensure no product leaves the floor until it’s perfect.
This World Quality Day, we’re taking a moment to recognize the quality brought to life by the commitment of engineers, inspectors, and technicians who make sure we meet the highest standards of performance, safety, and reliability.
Quality Starts with Every Detail
“For us, quality is non-negotiable,” said Joshua McDonald, Quality Engineer at LayerZero. “If it doesn’t meet our standards, it doesn’t ship — plain and simple.”
Joshua’s work focuses on ensuring the electrical and electronic integrity of components ranging from transformers and circuit breakers to entire power distribution systems. Every LayerZero product undergoes an extensive series of inspections and tests before it’s approved, including:
- High potential testing for insulation strength
- Torque and connection verification during assembly
- Waveform analysis once powered on
- Burn-in testing to confirm long-term reliability
Creating a Culture of Quality
When Mauricio Romero, Director of Quality, joined LayerZero in January 2024, he was tasked with building an entirely new quality department from the ground up. Less than two years later, that department has become a cornerstone of LayerZero’s operation.
“It’s been an incredible journey,” said Mauricio. “Our team has grown into a family that believes in accountability, precision, and pride in what we deliver.”
His work centers on establishing the company’s Quality Management System (QMS) and preparing for ISO 9001 certification, both aimed at ensuring long-term, repeatable excellence. Key initiatives include:
- Detailed process control checklists at every stage of production
- A Supplier Development Program to strengthen material consistency
- Integration of Lean and Six Sigma principles for continuous improvement
Mauricio points to something co-founder Milind Bhanoo said during a recent award ceremony: “We’re proud that our quality doesn’t just meet requirements, it exceeds expectations.”
“That’s really what defines LayerZero,” said Mauricio. “We’re not satisfied with good enough. We’re driven by what’s possible.”
Precision, Process, and Pride
For Lisa Modispaugh, Quality Engineer at LayerZero, quality begins long before a product reaches the test bench.
“Quality has to be involved hand-in-hand with everything,” she said. “Engineering designs the products, but they have to design them so manufacturing can assemble them correctly and produce something truly reliable.”
Lisa plays a role in developing work instructions, process standardization, and internal auditing. Her day often starts with reviewing PCIs, analyzing data trends, and identifying improvement opportunities.
She’s also focused on ergonomics, making sure components fit together efficiently so operators can assemble them safely and accurately. “We want to make sure people can do their jobs comfortably,” Lisa said. “That’s how you get consistency, which leads to quality.”
As part of LayerZero’s internal auditing process, her team checks products at multiple stages, from assembly, testing, and final staging.
“You need to be the face of the customer,” Lisa said. “It’s about making sure they get exactly what they need and that they’re happy with the product.”
Pride in the Work
Jeff Vance, Quality Technician at LayerZero, views his role as one of support, not enforcement.
“You can’t just show up for a paycheck,” Jeff said. “You’ve got to show up for a career. Quality assurance means caring about what you build and taking pride in it.”
Jeff’s work involves everything from maintaining LayerZero’s Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) program to conducting failure analysis tests and making sure every product performs exactly as intended.
“The quality team isn’t here to police anyone,” Jeff adds. “We’re here to support manufacturing, make processes clearer, and make sure people have the tools to do their best work. At the end of the day, we’re here to help.”
Technology with Purpose
LayerZero’s attention to quality also comes from advanced tools and processes that enhance precision and consistency. Across our facilities, teams use:
- CNC machining, robotic welding, and automated wire processing
- 3D CAD software for design accuracy
- Thermal and electrical testing systems for performance validation
These technologies help ensure that every LayerZero product — from Static Transfer Switches (STS) to Power Distribution Units (PDUs) — performs exactly as designed every time.
But as Mauricio emphasizes, “Technology alone doesn’t guarantee quality — people do. Automation gives us consistency, but it’s our people who make sure that consistency means excellence.”
Reliability, Built-In
At LayerZero Power Systems, quality is at the heart of reliability. Every department, every person, and every product contributes to building power distribution equipment that won’t fail when it matters most.
“Quality starts with each of us,” Joshua said. “Every bolt, every screw, every connection matters.”
On this World Quality Day, we celebrate the ones who ensure that every LayerZero product lives up to its promise of reliability by design.
