Celebrating 25 Years of Innovation at LayerZero Power Systems

Celebrating 25 Years of Innovation at LayerZero Power Systems
In April 2001, two engineers took a leap of faith with a simple but ambitious goal: build safer, more reliable power distribution equipment for mission-critical environments. 25 years later, that idea has grown into a company whose technology supports data centers, financial institutions, and critical infrastructure.
As LayerZero Power Systems marks its 25th anniversary, the milestone offers a moment to reflect on the company’s beginnings, the innovations that shape its growth, and the future it continues to build.
From an Attic Workshop to the First Breakthrough
The company was founded by engineers Milind M. Bhanoo and James M. Galm, both graduates of Case Western Reserve University. They left secure positions with a belief that the power distribution market needed something better, from products designed with reliability, transparency, and operator safety at the center.
Without venture capital or outside investment, the founders risked their personal savings and began building the company from the attic of a garage. There, alongside a small engineering team, they designed and assembled the first prototype that would become the foundation of the company’s technology.
That work produced the Optical Power Transfer Switch (OPTS), a triple-modular redundant static transfer switch designed to deliver exceptional reliability. The system incorporated innovations that were uncommon at the time, including fiber-optic controls, fault-tolerant architecture, advanced monitoring capabilities, and a touchscreen interface.
These features represented a new way of thinking about mission-critical power systems, where visibility into power events and operational transparency were just as important as reliability.
Building Momentum in Mission-Critical Power
The company’s early breakthrough came when a U.S. financial institution adopted the new OPTS static transfer switches to improve the reliability of its data processing operations. The installation helped demonstrate the technology’s value and opened the door for further growth in the data center and financial sectors.
Throughout the early and mid-2000s, LayerZero expanded its product portfolio while refining the technologies that set it apart. Systems such as remote power panels, power distribution units, and additional static transfer switch designs were introduced, all built around the same core principles of reliability, connectivity, and operator safety.
Innovation during this period included developments such as waveform capture, network connectivity, and advanced event recording, capabilities that helped operators better understand and respond to electrical disturbances within their facilities. Over time, these technologies helped establish the company’s reputation for highly engineered, information-centric power distribution systems.
Growing Alongside the Data Center Industry
As the digital economy expanded, so did the demand for reliable electrical infrastructure. Cloud computing, financial networks, and large-scale data centers require power systems capable of delivering continuous uptime.
LayerZero responded by investing heavily in engineering, manufacturing, and testing capabilities. By the early 2010s, the company had expanded its product lines and introduced new high-capacity static transfer switches and power distribution systems designed to support large-scale computing environments.
Recognition soon followed. In 2012, the company was named to the Weatherhead100 list of the fastest-growing companies in Northeast Ohio, reflecting both its technological progress and its expanding customer base.
Throughout these years, the focus remained consistent: designing products that combine durability, safety, and real-time monitoring capabilities so operators can understand exactly what is happening inside their power infrastructure.
Expansion for a New Era of Infrastructure
In recent years, the growth of cloud services, artificial intelligence, and hyperscale computing has accelerated demand for advanced power distribution systems.
LayerZero has responded with continued investment in facilities and technology. The company expanded its manufacturing and testing capabilities with the opening of a new assembly and testing facility in Aurora, Ohio, and further investments followed with expansions at its headquarters and additional manufacturing locations in Streetsboro, Ohio.
These developments are helping the company scale production while maintaining the rigorous engineering and testing standards that have defined its products for decades.
At the same time, LayerZero continues to advance its technologies, including new static transfer switch designs and monitoring systems tailored for high-density data centers and AI-driven computing environments.
The People Behind the Technology
While technology has played a central role in LayerZero’s success, the company’s growth has always been driven by the people behind it. Engineers, technicians, assemblers, and support teams contribute daily to a culture that values precision, accountability, and pride in craftsmanship.
From the earliest prototype built in a garage attic to the systems now supporting critical infrastructure worldwide, each product reflects the collective effort of the people who design, build, test, and support it.
Looking Toward the Next Chapter
Reaching the 25-year mark is both a milestone and a starting point for the future.
As global demand for digital infrastructure continues to grow, driven by cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and increasingly power-dense technologies, the importance of reliable electrical systems will only increase.
With a strong foundation built over the past quarter-century, LayerZero is well-positioned to meet those challenges. Continued investment in engineering, manufacturing capacity, and global partnerships will help ensure the company remains at the forefront of mission-critical power infrastructure.
From a garage attic in 2001 to a global presence supporting some of the world’s most demanding facilities, the journey of LayerZero Power Systems reflects the power of innovation, determination, and a commitment to doing things the right way.
And as the next chapter begins, that same spirit continues to guide the company forward.
