LayerZero Power Systems Introduces the Extended OSI Model

LayerZero Power Systems, LLC. today announced the introduction of the Extended Open System Interconnection (eOSI) Model, an evolution of the traditional OSI reference model designed to better reflect the realities of modern data center infrastructure.

The eOSI Model is an abstract framework that describes the architecture of data communications for networked systems through logical layers built upon one another. This layered approach enables data center professionals to more effectively identify, isolate, and resolve operational issues.

The eOSI Model consists of eight distinct layers: User, Application, Presentation, Session, Transport, Network, Data, Physical, and a newly introduced Foundation Layer. The addition of the Foundation Layer recognizes the critical role that power reliability plays in supporting all higher layers of data center operation.

The original Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) reference model was developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in 1977 and has remained unchanged since its inception. As data centers have evolved into increasingly complex and mission-critical environments, the eOSI Model expands upon the original framework to explicitly address power reliability as a foundational requirement.

Layer 0 — the Foundation Layer — encompasses reliable, safe, information-centric, and highly connected power distribution systems. Components within this layer include Static Transfer Switches, Power Distribution Units, and Remote Power Panels, all of which underpin the stability of the Physical Layer and beyond.

The introduction of the eOSI Model reflects LayerZero Power Systems’ commitment to advancing power reliability within the data center industry. By formally recognizing power as the foundation of all digital infrastructure, the eOSI Model reinforces LayerZero’s focus on delivering resilient, transparent, and highly connected power distribution solutions.

LayerZero Power Systems has introduced numerous power reliability innovations to the data center industry, including Triple Modular Redundant Static Transfer Switches, the finger-safe SafePanel™ panelboard design, and patented Dynamic Phase Compensation technology. These solutions are engineered to maximize uptime while enhancing operator safety, power quality visibility, and system connectivity.
