LayerZero's Patented Algorithm Eliminates Transformer Inrush
In many products used in the power distribution industry, when a transformer is initially connected to a source of AC voltage, a substantial surge of current known as transformer inrush may occur. During out of phase static transfer switch (eSTS) transfers, a transient current larger than the normal transformer operating current can flow for several cycles, potentially resulting in circuit breaker trips and loss of critical load.
LayerZero addresses this condition through a proprietary transfer algorithm developed specifically to minimize transformer inrush during out of phase transfers. The algorithm continuously evaluates source conditions and introduces a controlled delay in switching when required. This approach significantly reduces inrush current, helping prevent upstream protective device operation and eliminating the potential for UPS overload.
Earlier implementations of this method were protected by patent and remain in reliable operation in a large installed base today. The current implementation builds on that proven foundation and has been further refined to provide improved consistency and reliability across a wider range of operating conditions.
LayerZero’s Dynamic Phase Compensated Transfer effectively eliminates the transformer inrush typically associated with traditional STS designs.
